The critically-acclaimed vocal ensemble, Cantus, is a testament to the power of the human voice. This truly versatile group transitions from Renaissance arrangements to 21st-century compositions with ease, captivating audiences worldwide as one of the few full-time vocal ensembles. Their musical excellence, hailed by The Washington Post for its “expressive power,” contributes to the growing popularity of a cappella performance among music-lovers of all ages.
A cappella, Italian for “of the chapel,” is a performance style that features solo or group vocals without instrumental accompaniment. It descends from the centuries-old tradition of church choirs: the hauntingly beautiful Gregorian chant is an easily-recognizable example of this origin. Contemporary a cappella is a diverse art, encompassing numerous genres and styles from pop to blues and everything in between.
An excerpt from the program for the upcoming performance illuminates the inspiration behind the group's current production: "In their 2017-18 touring program Discovery of Sight, Cantus explores the essence of light and vision, reveling in the mystery, science, and poetry of what it means to truly 'see' with music by Richard Strauss, Franz Schubert, Eric Whitacre, and Einojuhani Rautavaara alongside a world premiere by Gabriel Kahane."
The Artist Series, produced by UCCS Presents, offers the best of the performing arts to Colorado Springs and is proud to bring you Cantus as part of its first season.
