In this day and age, it may be easy to think that authentic jazz and blues singers are few and far between. It’s true, but don’t despair: there are still those rare gems that bring their raw emotion, dusky tones, and technical skill to the contemporary stage. Catherine Russell is one of these, and she makes it look deceivingly effortless. As stated on her website:
“Her repertoire features a selection of gems from the 1920s through the Present; vital interpretations, bursting with soul and humor. With an off-the-beaten-path song selection, sparkling acoustic swing, and a stunning vocal approach, Catherine Russell has joined the ranks of the greatest interpreters and performers of American Popular Song.”
Catherine Russell continues to be sought after by international audiences and has performed on four continents with superstars from David Bowie to Wynton Marsalis. She is also a prolific recording artist, having performed in over 200 albums and produced six of her own. Her most recent, "Harlem on My Mind," was released in 2016.
UCCS Presents was proud to bring Catherine Russell to the Ent Center for the Arts as part of the Artist Series’ inaugural season. The audience experienced the cutting-edge acoustics and intimate atmosphere of the Chapman Foundations Recital Hall on April 19th.
