Theatreworks Launches Program to Bring Free Shakespeare to the Pikes Peak Region

COLORADO SPRINGS—Theatreworks is excited to announce a new program, Free-for-All, that brings free theater performances to the Pikes Peak region. The program kicks off this summer with a touring production of William Shakespeare’s “The Comedy of Errors” at libraries, parks and community centers throughout July and August.

“Bringing accessible theater to everyone is an important part of our mission,” said artistic director Caitlin Lowans. “We started this program to build on Theatreworks’ rich history of touring Shakespeare throughout Colorado. Creating opportunities for our dynamic and diverse communities to gather together and celebrate is an essential part of the Free-for-All program.”

The 75-minute adaptation of “The Comedy of Errors” features Shakespearean text retold in a fun, fast-paced and family-friendly production perfect for a summer outing. The story is centered on two sets of identical twins, separated at birth by shipwreck, who find themselves in the same city during a chaotic day full of mistaken identities, nuns, merchants, stolen rings and sorcery. The cast features seven local actors: Alex Wimmerle, Ambrosia Fees-Armstrong, Anna Faye Hunter, Dante Finley, Julia Greene, Rachel Fey, and Sean Sharif. The design team includes Marie Verdu (props and scenic design) and Maelia Kalua (costumes).

Free-for-All has received generous support from several community partners. Pikes Peak Library District is a primary partner and will be hosting five performances at both library locations and mobile library stops.

“We are thrilled to be partnering with Theatreworks to bring this production to PPLD locations,” said Heidi Buljung, Senior Librarian for Adult Services at PPLD. “It’s always our goal to create opportunities for arts and culture experiences to impact individual lives and build community. This presentation of ‘The Comedy of Errors’ is a perfect way for us to do that.”

The program is also supported by the Daniels Fund Ethics Initiative at UCCS, PeakRadar.com, El Pomar Foundation (Veteran & Military Affairs) and Jeff Flygare.

The tour of “The Comedy of Errors” will continue throughout fall 2019 with performances in local middle and high schools. Contact education@uccspresents.org for more information.
